This year, as I delved deeper into my studies and advocacy, I’ve been continually inspired by the global efforts of countless individuals and organizations who work tirelessly to protect our oceans, raise awareness, inform, and educate about the vital role the oceans play in regulating our climate and why and how we must act to change our consumer habits, dependence on fossil fuels and our relationship with nature to preserve all life on our planet. I wrote a book, Saltwater Stoke, as a humble dedication to the countless individuals who do make a difference without recognition or reward.
As the year 2023 draws to a close, I am hopeful for the future, despite the perceived failings of COP28, it did get everybody in the same room talking together, motivated and inspirational speakers highlighted the crucial and urgent action needed, and fearless investigative journalists raised public awareness and shone a light on the shortcomings of COP28’s outcomes.
The outstanding achievements that we as a species and as a society, a community of United Nations made in 2023, for me, were without doubt the Global Ocean Treaty and the pushback against Deep-Sea Mining.
The Global Ocean Treaty paves the way for a network of marine sanctuaries, the culmination of nearly two decades of negotiations, symbolizes a united commitment to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030, ensuring the recovery of marine life and ecosystems.
The UN’s International Seabed Authority resisted commercial pressures to green light Deep-sea Mining practices. This decision, influenced by extensive campaigning, signifies a crucial step in safeguarding our ocean’s depths from potentially destructive exploitation.
There were a few people however who inspired and motivated me personally and professionally through 2023 and will continue to do so in years to come. These people have helped shape the way I see the world, how I think about my own purpose and the motivation and resilience I need to embody that purpose. These individuals are truly worth reading and listening to;
At the forefront of maritime innovation stands Professor Lynn Loo, the CEO of the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation. Taking a sabbatical from Princeton University, Professor Loo has made monumental strides in making science both accessible and engaging. Her work at the Centre has been pivotal in challenging conventional thinking in the shipping industry, steering towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. Her leadership in 2023 has been instrumental in accelerating the shipping industry’s transition to a greener future, aligning with the urgent need for maritime decarbonization.
Shaun Tomson, a world champion surfer turned motivational speaker, has continued to impact lives through his ‘Code’ method. This approach, an amalgamation of his surfing prowess and life lessons, has been a beacon for individuals, teams, and organizations seeking purpose and direction. In 2023, Shaun’s workshops and speeches have inspired many to harness their inner strength and face life’s challenges with resilience and hope.
Oscar Chalupsky’s battle against cancer has been nothing short of heroic. The Olympian and former World Surfski Champion’s journey through his diagnosis and treatment of multiple myeloma has exemplified true courage and determination. His resilience in the face of adversity serves as a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s indomitable strength.
Lewis Pugh, an endurance swimmer known for his extraordinary feats, took his advocacy for ocean conservation to new lengths in 2023. His 315-mile swim down the Hudson River was more than an athletic endeavor; it was a clarion call to highlight the critical role rivers play in maintaining a habitable planet. Lewis’s dedication to using his swims to draw attention to environmental issues continues to inspire and galvanize action towards ocean conservation.
Finally, Amy Westervelt’s work as a climate journalist has been nothing short of fearless. In 2023, she was named Covering Climate Now’s Journalist of the Year, a testament to her unwavering commitment to calling out the hypocrisy and failings in politicized climate action. Her incisive reporting and storytelling have not only informed but also galvanized a broader understanding and engagement with climate issues.
As we set our course for 2024, these individuals’ contributions remind us that change is possible through resilience, innovation, purpose, and fearless pursuit of truth. Their stories weave a tapestry of hope and action, encouraging each of us to play our part in the stewardship of our oceans and the planet. Their legacies will no doubt ripple through the coming year, guiding and inspiring us in our continued journey towards a more sustainable and just world.
